A true Quebec institution, Mediafilm’s mission is to promote quality film and help the public adopt a more critical approach to film.

With its vast film database, it was the first organization to publish a compendium of French-language films in North America.

Looking to the future with Mediafilm

Although Mediafilm has long been a fixture on the Quebec movie scene, the site and its image were showing signs of obsolescence that limited its ability to reach new audiences.

Our collaboration began in 2022 with translation and revision projects. A few months later, in 2023, Mediafilm approached us with a major mandate: to reposition its brand to align with the organization’s current reality as well as its new development plan for various Mediafilm sub-brands.

Our role

We worked closely with the Mediafilm team, leading workshops to begin shaping its new brand image. Our challenge was to preserve its historical footing while ushering the brand into the present day.

We started by defining Mediafilm’s identity, then set about designing its official website, with the aim of positioning it as an indispensable tool for film buffs across French-speaking Canada. Lying at the heart of our UX strategy was the desire to once again put Mediafilm’s editorial mission front-and-centre by leveraging its unique rating system and its experienced editorial team.

Mediafilm rating system

Mediafilm’s rating system is well known in the Quebec film industry.

The ratings have always been encased in parentheses; they are an integral part of its trademark. When building its new visual identity, we worked hard to reinterpret the parentheses in a more graphic and modern way.

Common values

Mediafilm unites the community of movie buffs and specialists by promoting intelligent criticism, creativity, and independent opinion. As an agency that values collaboration and creativity, Espresso sees Mediafilm’s values as a reflection of its own.
